Spotting seals on Texel

Seals

Seals are common in the Wadden Sea around Texel in our country. There are more than 10,000 seals living in the Wadden area.

Born in winter

Grey seal pups are born in winter. From the end of November, you can spot the first seal pups on the mudflats and on the beach around Texel. These young ‘acrobats of the sea’ have thick fur and look cute. They are good at biting off, so always keep your distance. Seals are born on the beach and cannot go directly into the water yet. The mother goes in search of fish and ensures that the young seal grows quickly. When he loses his thick fur, he also learns to swim.

Seal on the beach of Texel

Do you see a seal on the beach? Then you don’t have to sound the alarm immediately. It may well be that the seal is resting for a while, or that a young seal is waiting for its mother. Stay at a distance of binoculars and keep your dog on a leash at a distance from the animal, so that you do not cause the seal unnecessary stress. Can you see from a distance that the seal is in bad shape and are you worried about the pup’s welfare? Then it is advisable to call Ecomare on 0222-317741.

Seals at Ecomare

Seals are taken care of in Ecomare that would not make it on their own. Such as young animals that have lost their mother and are not yet able to take care of themselves, but also animals that are weakened by illness. If they are doing well again, they will be released on the Texel beach or on a sandbank in the Wadden Sea.

Seals on the mudflats

There are a number of sandbanks off the coast of Texel where large groups of seals live all year round. With various boats such as Het Sop, the TX25, De Vrijheid, TX44 and TX20, you can make a trip from Oudeschild to the sandbanks.
